Applications: Zinc Sulfide in the past was a very important high index material

because it can be evaporated easily from resistively heated boats. It was used

e.g. for interference filters in the visible range(ZnS/Cryolite) and in large

quantities for cold light mirrors(ZnS/SiO, ZnS/MgF2). Since ZnS films are

rather soft as compared with oxide films, ZnS was replaced by TiO2 and

other oxides in many applications. Today ZnS is used mainly for IR applications,

for holographic applications and for decorative coatings. ZnS is also an

interesting material for production of electro luminescent thin film devices.
